Indonesian Economy Disrupted Due to 26 Thousand Containers Stuck at Port

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said that the Indonesian economy was disrupted by the impact of 26,000 containers stuck at the port. In fact, a number of industrial raw materials were also stuck.

She said that tens of thousands of containers of goods stuck at the port disrupted the flow of goods at the port as a whole.

“Since Permendag 36/2024, which indeed requires that containers exit with various requirements including in this case technical considerations from related agencies, so that in terms of volume and in terms of the flow of goods, it is very hampered by the accumulation,” said Sri Mulyani at the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) Tanjung Priok, Jakarta, Saturday (18/5/2024).

It was recorded that there were 17,304 containers stuck at Tanjung Priok Port. Then, there were 9,111 containers stuck at Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya. From both of them, a total of more than 26,000 containers were stuck.

The Minister of Finance said that this also disrupted national economic activities. The reason is, there are a number of industrial raw materials for manufacturing activities that cannot be processed immediately.

“Well, this certainly has an impact on economic activities. Especially for the import of raw materials needed for the supply chain and manufacturing activities in Indonesia,” he said.

He welcomed the issuance of Permendag 8/2024 which relaxes the rules for these goods to enter. He also asked the relevant parties to process several new requirements.

“We from the Ministry of Finance DJBC welcome the change in Permendag 36/2024 to Permendag 8/2024 which simplifies the process of requirements for the release of these containers by changing the requirements to only surveyor reports,” he said.

“However, because there are already 17,304 containers and 9,111 containers at TJ Perak, of course the surveyor report must also be expedited so that it does not become a new bottleneck,” added Sri Mulyani.
